A woman was injured when a light pole came crashing down in a parking lot in Nashua on Wednesday.
The pole came down just before noon at the Webster Shopping Plaza on Daniel Webster Highway and struck the woman.
The woman, who is 74, suffered serious head trauma and was transferred by helicopter to a Boston hospital for treatment.
The wind was gusting when Jason Tran, manager of Galaxy Nails, looked out his store window just before noon and witnessed the incident.
"Very strong wind, hit the pole and the pole like, exactly hit her head," Tran said. "And she fell over."
Tran said he pulled out his phone to call 911 as others rushed to the woman's side.
Nashua Deputy Fire Chief Mark Wholey said his initial belief is that the wind and the condition of the pole may have played a role.
"The poles that are in those parking lots aren't wooden utility poles. Oftentimes, they're aluminum based," Wholey said. "So it doesn't take much to compromise that. And with the wind that was in the area today, could have just been the combination that allowed that to occur."
News 9 reached out to Kimco, the company that owns the shopping plaza.
"We can confirm that unfortunately a woman was injured today at Webster Square. We express our sincere concern and hope for the injured person's full and speedy recovery," Kimco said in a statement. "The safety and well-being of our customers, tenants, and employees is our top priority. We are currently investigating the cause of the incident, and in the meantime have ensured that the area where the incident took place is safe and clear of debris."
An investigation is underway.
