Millennium Place all aglow in more energy efficient lighting
December 14, 2022
Recreational facilities play an important part in the fabric and connection of a community.
Thanks in part to a Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC) grant of approximately $645,000, lights in the ice and soccer arenas and in other areas in Millennium Place have been replaced with energy efficient lighting to reduce the building's electricity consumption. With the County's contribution, the project totalled over $915,000.
The $10,000 Salto Gymnastics improvements project to replace the high bay gymnasium lights was also completed through the use of MCCAC funding.
LED light bulbs are more durable and offer better light quality than other types of lighting. They emit very little heat, use at least 75 per cent less energy, and last up to 25 times longer.
It is estimated the Millennium Place project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 379 tonnes per year, with annual energy cost savings of about $45,000.
"It is great to partner with the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre on these projects to reduce our environmental impact," says Mayor Rod Frank. "Not only does the retrofit work lower emissions, it saves the County money on electricity. With the escalating costs of energy, we know this is more important than ever. Every taxpayer dollar must count."
Guided by the Strategic Energy Management Plan, Strathcona County continues to implement other energy efficiency projects to reduce its environmental footprint. Through County dollars and other partner funding, more LED lighting replacements are being completed at the arenas and curling rinks at Sherwood Park Arena and Sports Centre, Glen Allan Recreation Complex, Strathcona Olympiette Centre, Moyer Recreation Centre and the Ardrossan Recreation Complex.
